Educated at Otago Boys’ High School. Volunteered from school for service in the Boer War. Played his early representative Rugby as a wing three quarter. Came into the 1910 All Black team to Australia when ‘Circus’ Hayward was unable to travel and played at wing-forward in the First Test and in the back row of the scrum the next two. McKellar retired as Collector of Customs in Dunedin.
