Educated at Lumsden School and Southland Boys’ High School, 1st XV 1915. First represented New Zealand on the 1925 tour of New South Wales where he appeared in all three matches against the state side. Toured South Africa with the 1928 All Blacks, appearing in three Tests at 1St five- eighth and one at 2nd five-eighth. His final match for the All Blacks was against North Otago before the series against the 1930 Lions. Described as ‘swift and elusive’, Lance Johnson stood 5’ 8” and weighed around 12 stone. Played three Ranfurly Shield games for Hawke’s Bay 1926, including the 58-8 drubbing of Wellington, the team he represented over seven seasons. Canterbury selector 1949, 50.
