Educated Miramar South Primary School and Rongotai College. Played for a Wellington XV 1954, 55 before gaining a place in the Wellington team 1956. A 16 stone lock who stood 6’ 41/2’ tall Horsley was selected in the team to tour South Africa 1960. Improved greatly on tour playing in 14 of the 26 matches in South Africa including the final three internationals as well as
in three matches in Australia. Described as an honest and determined player, Horsley made his only All Black appearance in New Zealand against the Rest of New Zealand after the team’s return home. Included in the 1963-64 team to tour the British
Isles and France but after showing good form early in the tour playing in 12 of the first 20 matches, Horsley had his appendix removed which kept him out of action until a match in British Columbia on the journey home. Captain and coach of the Kia Toa club in Palmerston North 1963-65. Nelson selector and coach of Nelson-Marlborough-Golden Bay combined 1966. Golden Bay-Motueka selector 1967, 68; Nelson Bays selector 1969, 70. Member of the Wellington Junior Advisory Board and Under-19 selector 1974, 75. Wellington club chairman 1975. Ron Horsley worked in the family business and then became a hotel proprietor. Now resides in retirement in Rotorua.
